About Breed

The Saluki is a graceful and elegant dog breed that is believed to be one of the oldest known breeds in existence. Originally from the Middle East, Salukis were bred for their exceptional hunting skills and were highly regarded as royal and noble companions. They have a regal appearance, with a slim, athletic build, long legs, and a sleek coat. Salukis are known for their incredible speed and endurance, making them excellent coursing and hunting dogs.

Characteristics/Mentality

Salukis are known for their gentle and sensitive nature. They form strong bonds with their families and are generally good with children and other dogs when properly socialized. They have a calm and dignified demeanor but can be reserved or aloof with strangers.

Size And Appearance

Salukis are a medium to large-sized breed. Males typically weigh between 40 to 65 pounds (18 to 29 kg), while females are slightly smaller, weighing between 35 to 50 pounds (16 to 23 kg). They stand around 23 to 28 inches (58 to 71 cm) tall at the shoulder. Salukis have a slender and athletic build, with a deep chest, long and graceful neck, and a slim, tapering tail. They have a sleek, silky coat that comes in a variety of colors and patterns.

Health

Salukis are generally a healthy breed, but like all dogs, they may be prone to certain health issues. These can include genetic conditions such as hip dysplasia, eye diseases, and cardiac problems. Regular veterinary check-ups, a balanced diet, and exercise can help maintain their overall health.

Fur Work

Salukis have a short, smooth coat that requires minimal grooming. Regular brushing to remove loose hair and occasional baths are usually sufficient to keep their coat in good condition. However, special attention should be given to their ears, as they can be prone to ear infections.
