About Breed

The Shiba Inu is a small and ancient Japanese breed known for its spirited and bold personality. They are often referred to as “little foxes” due to their fox-like appearance, with a curled tail and upright ears. Shiba Inus are well-balanced and compact dogs with a confident demeanor and an alert expression.

Characteristics/Mentality

Shiba Inus are known for their independent and spirited personalities. They can be somewhat aloof with strangers but are loyal and affectionate with their families. They have a strong prey drive and should be supervised around small animals. Shiba Inus are often described as “cat-like” due to their cleanliness and tendency to groom themselves.

Size And Appearance

Shiba Inus are small to medium-sized dogs. On average, they weigh between 17 to 23 pounds (7.5 to 10.5 kilograms) and stand about 13.5 to 16.5 inches (34 to 42 centimeters) tall at the shoulder. They have a compact and muscular build, with a proportionate head and a thick double coat that comes in various colors, such as red, sesame, black and tan, and cream.

Health

Shiba Inus are generally a healthy breed. However, they can be prone to certain health issues, including allergies, luxating patellas (knee joint problems), hip dysplasia, and certain eye conditions. Regular veterinary check-ups and a balanced diet can help maintain their overall health and well-being.

Fur Work

Shiba Inus have a thick double coat that requires regular brushing to prevent matting and to remove loose fur. They shed heavily twice a year during seasonal coat blowouts. During these periods, more frequent brushing is necessary to manage shedding. Shiba Inus are generally clean dogs and do not have a strong doggy odor.
